Engineers developed the first self-contained flexible microbattery contact lens. She is capable few hours power the built-in electronics for playback and transmission of visual information wirelessly.
The development is part of an ambitious project to create a new generation of oculometers associated with the emergence of augmented reality technology. With these lenses can be implement human-machine interfaces, analyze cognitive load and add other features.
The invention of the IMT Atlantique and the Center for Microelectronics of Provence can integrate an LED display, an RF transmitter for wireless communication, and sensors for tracking gaze direction. Wherein contact lenses perform their primary function.
In the future, the researchers plan to implement flexible electronics based on graphene.. This will allow add the function of additional vision, new communication systems, improve the battery and integrate computing devices.

The development has already interested Microsoft and the Office of Advanced Research Projects of the US Department of Defense.
